Wednesday, 06/12/2019 | Enhanced UV camera portfolio now available!

Providing you UV sensitive cameras has been our matter of course for many years. With the pco.edge 4.2 bi UV and pco.panda 4.2 bi UV we're taking it to a new level: The specialized optical input window provides a high QE in the ultraviolet wavelength range. The systems themselves are based on our tried and trusted sCMOS cameras with modern back illuminated sensor technology. But first things first.

pco.ultraviolet

pco.ultraviolet

Back in 2013 we brought a CCD camera called pco.ultraviolet into the scientific market. As its name implies, the pco.ultraviolet is specialized to provide high sensitivity in the ultraviolet range of the spectrum. Exposure times can be adjusted from micro seconds up to one minute. This ultra-compact camera is highly suited for imaging applications where ultraviolet detection is an essential requirement.

Comtessa project

COMTESSA project

The COMTESSA project is one of them. It uses 6 of our pco.ultraviolet cameras since its kick-off in 2015. COMTESSA stands for Camera Observation and Modelling of 4D Tracer Dispersion in the Atmosphere. The application’s goal is to deepen our understanding of turbulence and plume dispersion in the atmosphere. This is done by bringing together full 4-dimensional (space and time) information.  It combines a (nearly) passive tracer (sulfur dioxide, SO2), advanced data analysis,  turbulence and dispersion modeling.

pco.edge 4.2 bi UV & pco.panda bi UV

pco.edge 4.2 bi UV & pco.panda 4.2 bi UV

Now, 6 years later, we are proud to introduce the next generation of our ultraviolet sensitive camera series: pco.edge 4.2 bi UV and pco.panda 4.2 bi UV. Both cameras stand out with their high resolutions of 2048 x 2048 pixels and 6.5 µm² pixel size. This allows for highly qualitative images. At full resolution their 16 bit sCMOS sensors acquire up to 40 fps with exposure times down to 10 µs.

The special aspect about pco.edge 4.2 bi UV: Its adjustable cooling system enables the use of air or water to cool the sensor down to -25 °C. At this temperature the dark current is reduced to 0.2 e-/pixel/s. The pco.edge 4.2 bi UV incorporates a powerful USB 3.1 interface complementing its performance.

Needless to say, the pco.panda 4.2 bi UV also is one of a kind. It comes in an ultra-compact design of 65 x 65 x 65 mm³. The camera is well and truly suited for low light conditions without the need for active cooling. It operates with USB 3.1, too. However, the pco.panda 4.2 bi UV provides direct power delivery via USB cable, making external power supplies redundant.
